Kuhli Loach (Live Aquarium Fish)

The Kuhli Loach (Pangio kuhlii) is one of the most charming and unusual fish you can add to a community aquarium. With its slender eel-like body wrapped in bold dark bands over a warm orange base, it looks more like a tiny aquatic snake than a fish — and its playful, curious personality makes it a favourite among Pakistani fishkeepers.

Peaceful, hardy and endlessly entertaining, Kuhli Loaches spend their days tucked away among plants and driftwood, then emerge at dusk to wriggle across the substrate hunting for leftover food. They are natural clean-up crew members that add life to the bottom level of your tank.

Diet & Feeding

Omnivorous scavengers that will happily accept sinking pellets, granules, frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, and blanched vegetables. Because they feed at the bottom and are most active in the evening, drop food in shortly before lights out so they get their share before faster fish reach it.

Tank Setup Tips

• 🪸 Soft sand substrate is essential — Kuhli Loaches love to burrow, and sharp gravel can damage their delicate barbels and skin
• 🌿 Provide plenty of hiding spots — driftwood, caves, and dense planting make them feel secure and encourage daytime activity
• 🔒 Cover your tank — they are escape artists and can slip through small gaps
• 👥 Keep in groups of 4–6 or more — they are social and become far more visible and confident in numbers

Ideal Tankmates

Excellent with almost any peaceful community fish — Neon Tetras, Cardinal Tetras, Ember Tetras, Rasboras, Guppies, Corydoras, Gouramis, and dwarf shrimp. Avoid large cichlids, aggressive barbs, or any fish big enough to view them as a snack.
